Social Norms- Jake Hughes

  1. In my personal experience with food choice, I have seen many people consume food with no regards for their health. The food choice that I am choosing to talk about is the consumption of Chipotle in State College. As we all know, college students in State College love their Chipotle. I have nothing against it! I think the food is pretty good and I enjoy chips and guacamole every now and then. Recently on the West Coast and even more recently on the East Coast, Chipotle has been said to have given E-coli and other harmful bacteria to its customers. I live right near Chipotle in State College so I see everyday how many people still chose to eat there. You would walk past and think there had never even been a food problem at Chipotle. The social norm in this situation would be the college population. College students still get together to consume Chipotle with no regard to the scandal at hand.
  2. While eating unhealthy with other students, you can become unaware of the health risks by focusing more on the taste. The realization of what you are eating is far more important to know. I talk about this social norm for the concern of other students, in hopes that they will recognize what kind things have resulted from eating certain foods. By only worrying about the taste and the social aspect of eating this food, the customer might not understand what is at risk. Not only health problems, but the chance of obesity is on the line when consuming food for the taste and social aspect. I hear from the workers of fast food all the time that the same people come in multiple times a week for the same food. This is extremely unhealthy. Eating fast food or even fast casual can be alright if monitored. Eating fast food a few times a month would be acceptable. The social norm should be family. Family should implement healthy eating habits such as fresh produce and good protein.

  1. Hi Jake, my name is Samantha and I took the time to read your blog post this week. As someone who is constantly on a tight schedule (between work and school), I find it so much easier to spend a few minutes at the drive-thru window than I do spending hours at home preparing meals. Certainly there must be some way we can come to a simple solution to eating healthier on a shorter amount of time? Well, we can only hope that there is a simple solution, but there most likely is not.

  2. Hello Jake,
I found your post very interesting. I agree with the fact that so many people eat at Chipotle because everybody does and talks about how good it is. Chipotle is always the first choice when someone is asked where they want to it. There is almost a presence of peer pressure. I feel it would be a good idea if consumers knew what they were about to eat. Check out my blog at: https://wp.me/p3RCAy-bL6

  3. Hi Jake,
My name is Brian Peck, here is a link to my post: http://sites.psu.edu/geog30/2016/03/01/locavore/, feel free to read it!
I really enjoyed your post and tend to agree with your perspective on fast food. In moderation most things are okay for you. Anything in excess is nearly always bad for you. As parents my wife and I have decided to not eat fast food, therefore our children do not eat fast food. It can be difficult at times, when you are running late and need something fast for the screaming munchkins in the back seat, McDonald’s look really tempting!
I think that you are correct in stating that families should implement healthy eating habits, it is not always easy but children are always watching and learning from their parents, the good and the bad, the healthy and the unhealthy!

Your post interested me because I go to University Park as well and I know exactly what you’re talking about. Chipotle is definitely the social norm in State College. I myself never had Chipotle till I moved here, and people were shocked by that. I personally will have to disagree with you about people not caring about their safety, since the E-coli breakout never was impacted in our local area and they resolved that issue a few months ago. They found the source of the breakout of E-coli too so the food is “safer” now. I know the line is long, but it moves quick, pretty fresh, and you get a lot for your money.
