About Me

Hello everyone, my name is Domenic Continenza and I’m taking this class from State College, PA.  I grew up in Allentown, PA which is about one hour North from Philadelphia.  I’m a Criminal Justice major and a Sociology minor.  My career aspirations are too work in law enforcement and/or in the juvenile detention unit.  I’m interested in learning more about globalization and how technology has shaped the way we operate today.

One issue that I find very important is human society on the environment.  Natural resources are starting to become scarce, the global climate is changing, and species are becoming extinct because of it.  There needs to be more of an understanding to “Why” and “How” humans have an impact on the environment.  The social science part will help us understand why our resources are becoming depleted.

  1. Hi Domenic, I am from Hatfield PA just thirty minutes away from Allentown! My link to my bio is https://wp.me/p3RCAy-aR8, and I covered visualization, but you made some very valid points about resources. I thought it was very interesting how they portrayed a commodity chain to display this interaction of how the fish gets from the the ocean to our plate. What many of us do not realize is if we consume too much, we will outdo reproduction causing a shortage of fish. I think people as a whole need to be educated on how our lifestyles effect the environment and everyone around us.

  2. Hi Domenic,

I’m Tanya, and I’m in the SRA field. It never fails to amaze me how many of us are located in PA, even though Penn State is located here. I’ve been all over the state and have been in Allentown several times. You can view my introduction blog here: http://geog030.dutton.psu.edu/2016/01/15/getting-to-know-me-tanya-smith/

I find it interesting that you speak of the effect humans have on the environment. You make some very valid points, and they are ones I also think of. One that I can add kind of comes full circle. Humans have drastic effects on the environment. Which in turn causes direct harm back onto humans as well. Yes, we have forced extinction of certain species, but we are also causing disease (such as cancers) on ourselves as well because of environmental factors we created. It almost seems like a never ending battle.

I wish you the best in this course and look forward to getting to know you better throughout the semester.

    Tanya
